My name is Chris Powell. My beautiful wife Carla and I live in Lynchburg, VA. We were both born and raised in California. We have three grown children and four wonderful grandchildren. We even have two step-grandchildren and a step-great granddaughter. Carla and I were married in 1976. She is more beautiful today than the day we married when she was only nineteen years old.
I retired from the U.S. Navy after twenty-three years of active service. I learned leadership experientially during this period. I led thousands of sailors in several sea and shore (training) commands. I saw the best, most decisive, top notch leaders found anywhere in the world. I also observed the worst possible examples of attempts at leadership (they did not survive a Navy career). I finally retired as a Senior Chief Petty Officer (E-8). Initially I was a Naval Aviator for sixteen years and converted from a “brown shoe” to a “black shoe” for the remainder of my career. I am a graduate of the Navy Senior Enlisted Academy, the senior enlisted training platform for leadership.
I hold three degrees from Liberty University, a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies (business and education cognates), a M.A. in Christian Ministry (discipleship & small group cognates), and a M.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies (pastoral counseling & theology cognates). I am now pursuing a M.A. in Life Coaching which will lead to certification through The Board of Christian Life Coaching.
My collaboration and certification with the John Maxwell Team for my coaching, training, and speaking business is focused to help small businesses succeed. I have helped several small business owners turn their businesses around from failing to prospering in a different business advisory group in the past. This was a business process approach of advising businesses, not a leadership coaching approach. I prefer helping people grow that leads to growth personally and in business rather than advising business on processes.
The current efforts for the life coach degree, along with the John Maxwell Team, gives me the credentialing and credibility I need to perform in a high-performance environment to help small to medium sized businesses succeed while allowing me the flexibility to help my wife with her functional medicine coaching business, all set in a Christian worldview and context. I can help business people who she works with to achieve their business goals. All of this is to the honor and glory of God.
My favorite hobby is spending quality time with my wife and “plinking” with a slingshot and a pellet rifle. I also enjoy fishing along with something that has become a hobby recently, running geese off our community lake.
