Heather Moraitis
I was recently elected City Commissioner for District 1 in Fort Lauderdale, FL. I was born in Fort Lauderdale and graduated from the University of Florida with a Master’s degree in Education. I returned to Fort Lauderdale to raise my family with my husband George upon completion of his service in the United States Navy. I worked for the Navy in Italy overseeing two child development centers. After returning to Fort Lauderdale, I was an education consultant for Jack and Jill Children’s Center helping relocate the center from Sistrunk Blvd to the current location on Broward Blvd. I taught elementary school at Westminster Academy before serving as their Director of Development. I have been active in the community and was the president of the Junior League of Greater Fort Lauderdale where she worked with a group to launch the Fort Lauderdale Independence Training & Education (FLITE) Center for youth aging out of foster care. During my time in the Junior League, i also led a team to write a nutrition program for 2nd grade students which was implemented in Broward County Public Schools. I received the Governor’s Points of Light Award and the Florida Department of Education Commissioner’s Business Recognition Award for my service to the community. I have participated in Leadership Broward, Lifeworks Leadership, Women in Leadership and Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce Leadership Fort Lauderdale. I am a member of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, Navy League Fort Lauderdale Council and prior member of the City of Fort Lauderdale Marine Advisory Board. I currently serves on the board of the Coral Ridge Isles Homeowner's Association. I am married to Representative George Moraitis and we have two teenage daughters. Since 2008, I have volunteered for the YMCA of South Florida.
